Classilla isn'tfinished

It's worth repeating: Classilla isn't finished. WaMCom's last updatewas in 2003, and that means over six years of Mozilla patches and updates tocatch up on. While Classilla has a lot of critical patches applied (which iswhy it's being released, even in unfinished form), thereare still security, stability and compatibility issues yet to be fixedand many sites still won't work, or worse. Youwill be using software that is still in evolution. Exciting, right?Yes. And quite possibly unstable. Know what you're getting into. UsingClassilla is at your own risk. There are still many bugs!

Remember: the Classilla maintainers and administrators arenot responsible for any damage to your computer, data or operatingsystem that Classilla may do. Again, you use Classilla at your OWN RISK.We eat our own dog food, but that doesn't mean italways tastes good.

Classilla isexclusively* for the classic MacOS

While Mozilla is a cross-platform environment, and Classilla is based onits XPFE system, Classilla's highest priority is whetherit works on classic Macintosh, and any features that get added all have thesame requirement. If it'll work and it'll help, it'll be inClassilla. If Mozilla's code won't work as is and Classilla needs thatfeature, it'll be rewritten if we can.Classilla isn't designed as an application where MacOS supportis an afterthought; it's built to be Mac first and always.

*Well ...maybe for BeOS/PowerPC also. Cameron Kaiserhas a real live BeBox/133 and it needs a better browser thanNetPositive.

Classilla isn'ta typical desktop browser

Classilla focuses on the mobile weband mobile sites, a better fit for our old Macs and old code. It takes alittle getting used to, but thanks to today's smartphones, many of themost popular sites have mobile versions that are almost, if not more, functional than their desktop equivalents. And that pays off for us too:simpler pages render faster on old CPUs, use less memory and get more done. Our Macs aren't getting any younger, but with a mobile-oriented browser, they can get faster.

Classilla isa browser with a future

Classilla has two purposes: first and foremost, to get a modern web browserrunning again on classic Macs. But secondly, it's a seed: not only does itget a process established for building itself, it establishes a template forother free open-source projects to follow. By putting the ability to maintainour own software in our own hands, as users of classic Macs, we ensure thatOS 9 will continue to survive. Classilla has a path for maintenance and a meansto improve based on a solid foundation. With tools baked right into thebrowser to even let usersdynamicallyreprogram it, we're putting our codewhere our mouth is. The future is in your hands, and the future's in yourcontrol. This isn't a dead end.

Classilla isn'tgoing to get there without your help

Classilla sure needs users: users appear in server logs, and remind siteowners that the whole world isn't using Windows or Internet Explorer. Butto continue to advance, Classilla needs contributors -- and you canhelp out even if you don't know the first thing about developing for OS 9.

Can't code in C or OS 9, but you know a lot about HTML and CSS? Become adistillerand help turn malfunctions into test cases, so that coders candevise specific, targetted fixes.Find out how on theClassilla Wiki.

Know enough C/C++ to be dangerous?Become a coder and help integrate Mozilla patches into Classilla, or even write completely new features. You don't even have to knowmuch about Mac programming to be helpful -- if you know CodeWarrior at all, come help out. Find out how on theClassilla Wiki.

Where can you download software updates for MacOS 9?

Mac Os 9 Install

Apple's Knowledge Base provides a handy summary of the available updates for MacOS 9. Of particular interest, this support document notes that you 'must install all prerequisite software before installing any update'.

For example, to update a Mac with MacOS 9.0 to MacOS 9.2.2, you must download and install updates in this order:

Pre-G3 based Macs that are capable of booting MacOS 9 only officially support MacOS 9.1 although hacks are available that make it possible to install MacOS 9.2.2 on some with pre-'NewWorld' ROMs. Apple recommends that you install the last version that your Mac will officially support.

Other Apple Knowledge Base articles also note that there are some differences between the downloadable update of MacOS 9.1 and the MacOS 9.1 install CD and that MacOS 9.2.2 provides improved compatiblity with MacOS X.

How do you install the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' on a PowerPC-based Mac?

Apple's Knowledge Base provides brief instructions on how to 'Install MacOS 9 to use Classic Applications' on PowerPC-based Macs that did not ship with the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' pre-installed. Please note that the 'Classic Environment' is not supported on PowerPC-based Macs running MacOS X 10.5 'Leopard.'

For other scenarios, the process of installing the MacOS 9 'Classic Environment' or a 'bootable' MacOS 9 'over' a current MacOS X installation may be a bit more involved. An archived blog posting from the now defunct MacFixIt blog has detailed tips and instructions that you may find to be useful.
